When being nice becomes a competition
“I am not impressed by your position, title, money. I am impressed by how you treat other people.”
Our ability to share information and opinions is greater than ever. Along with that, being into social impact became “a thing” and now we don’t just try to outshine each other with better Bali holiday photos but also with the number of companies we start, articles, conference photos and LinkedIn posts with share.
Saying things like: “I am working for a social enterprise” or “We are a values driven company” or “I founded a start up with people I met at the conference” is the new age bragging between (mostly) good hearted people who got a bit caught up in human nature of competition.
Trying to constantly remove myself from the imposed race of being nice. Having to remind myself that starting a successful start up was never my goal. Or do more good stuff than someone else. Just doing good is enough. It is the goal. Period.
As Aristotle said: Comparison is a thief of joy. Or maybe it wasn’t him who said that.
Be nice to each other and yourselves, fruity-tutties.
